\u201cWhat do we do?\u201d is the central theme of one of the most influential political-philosophical treatises of the 20th century.<\/span><\/p>\n

Aristotle, unusual for classical philosophy, emphasizes practical activity rather than the human capacity for thought. The three main sections of <\/span>The Human Condition<\/span><\/i> focus on labor, work, and action.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arendt distinguishes between endless labor, which aims to support the lives of individuals and society; work, which seeks to establish the permanence of things and create civilization as opposed to nature; and action \u2014 the ongoing and free interaction among all the diverse individuals forming society, their exchange of ideas, and the development of values for shaping political thought, memory, and history.<\/span><\/p>\n

Arendt explains the danger of losing personal freedom when society prioritizes labor outcomes\u2014such as comfort and consumerism\u2014and neglects participation in public life and politics. She highlights the delicacy of institutions that rely on everyone’s continuous efforts and underscores the importance of birth over death: every new person born has the potential to create something new.<\/span><\/p>\n
