In his poem, Shevchenko emphasizes not only Kateryna's personal tragedy — including desperate love, betrayal, loneliness, and life under social condemnation — but also the history of colonial dependence, which remains highly relevant for modern Ukraine.
A classic of Ukrainian literature, Taras Shevchenko’s poem Kateryna is a story of desperate love and the tragedy of a fallen woman — a poetic reflection on the patriarchal order and Ukrainian-Russian relations.
The poem is illustrated by Mykola Tolmachev, a Ukrainian artist born in 1993 in Brovary. He studied in France at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts. His portfolio includes participation in Art Paris and solo exhibitions in Brussels, Paris, and Kyiv.

Please note!
From July 1, 2026, changes have come into effect for international shipments to the European Union.
The EU has abolished the €150 duty-free threshold for international parcels.
A new fixed customs fee has been introduced: €3 per tariff line item in the customs declaration (separate HS code / country of origin). For book orders on our website, this means a single €3 fee per entire order, since books fall under the same tariff code.
This fee is included in the customs value and affects the subsequent calculation of import VAT.
You will need to pay this duty regardless of the shipping cost. The customs fee is a separate charge collected during customs clearance and is not included in the cost of shipping or the goods themselves.
Each EU country may have its own specifics regarding the application of customs payments, so please check with the relevant sources (your country's customs authority) before placing your order.
