In his poem, Shevchenko emphasizes not only Kateryna's personal tragedy — including desperate love, betrayal, loneliness, and life under social condemnation — but also the history of colonial dependence, which remains highly relevant for modern Ukraine.

A classic of Ukrainian literature, Taras Shevchenko's poem “Kateryna” is a story of desperate love and the tragedy of a fallen woman, a poetic reflection on the patriarchal order and Ukrainian-Russian relations.

The poem was illustrated by Mykola Tolmachev, a Ukrainian artist born in 1993 in Brovary. He studied in France at the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts, and his portfolio includes participation in Art Paris and solo exhibitions in Brussels, Paris, and Kyiv.
