Shevchenko the poet is a figure of such importance that it has overshadowed Shevchenko the man. What do we know about his character, temperament, human qualities, attitude toward children, and favorite foods? What kind of women did he prefer? What clothing styles did he favor? How did he feel about money? How did his appearance and health change throughout his life? What was his lifestyle like? These questions are addressed in the collection Private Shevchenko. It adds human traits to the typical image of the prophet and national genius, and does so in a scientific way. You might be surprised how much of Shevchenko’s life is not covered in the school curriculum.

Private Shevchenko is not about the Kobzar. This book describes a man of medium height, with a strong build, fair hair, and a round face. In his youth, he wore luxurious sideburns, but later a child called him “bald uncle.” He loved lafit, chikhir, and tea with rum. In short, it is a mini-encyclopedia of Taras Shevchenko's everyday life: what he ate, drank, what illnesses he endured, whom he loved, and where he spent the night.

Private Shevchenko launches our Ukrainian Literary Studies series. It was developed in partnership with the T. H. Shevchenko Institute of Literature of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine. The book was assembled by Oleksandr Boron, director of the Shevchenko Studies Department at the Institute.

This is a collection of articles about the private and everyday life of an outstanding individual. It contains no gossip or rumors, only scientifically verified facts. The authors discuss what Shevchenko's daily life included: the conditions in the apartments where he resided, the hotels and taverns he visited during his many travels, how he funded his lifestyle, places he went for a glass of gin with oysters, his wardrobe, habits, diet, women, children, and much more.
