Bohdan Krawchenko examines Ukraine's macrosocial development during the 20th century—from just before the 1917 revolutions to the early 1970s. After analyzing a broad range of open data and sources, Krawchenko demonstrates how Ukrainian national consciousness was shaped through the dialectic of resistance and adaptation to Soviet social realities.
The main themes of the book, which is based on the author's doctoral dissertation defended at Oxford University, are modernization, urbanization, Soviet economic and cultural policy, and national self-determination under colonial pressure. A new generation of readers, who now have access to many more archival sources, will find in this monograph a methodological tool for better understanding themselves as part of the Ukrainian political nation.
Bohdan Krawchenko is also an honorary doctor of the University of North London and an honorary professor at the Kyiv-Mohyla Academy. As a practitioner, he contributed to the development of modern Ukrainian statehood. He founded the Institute of Public Administration and Local Self-Government under the Cabinet of Ministers of Ukraine (1992), led it, and was one of the initiators and authors of the first Law of Ukraine “On Public Service” (1993).
