A spring trip to Florence, a mix-up with a room, an unexpected encounter with an eccentric father and son, one careless kiss — and Lucy Honeychurch's life, raised in traditional English restraint and decency, no longer fits the typical upper-class behavior of the English.
A Room with a View is a witty and sophisticated satire on aristocratic customs and, at the same time, a sincere story about love and freedom of choice. One of E. M. Forster's most famous novels, published in Ukrainian for the first time.
Edward Morgan Forster did not experiment with his form, but his novels explore themes that define modernist literature — sexuality, social role boundaries, and the search for an authentic life. Despite E. M. Forster's long-standing legacy in British literature, he remains relatively unknown to Ukrainian readers.
During a trip to Florence, Lucy, an English lady from high society, encounters adventures and a lifestyle that are different from her restrained, well-mannered existence, which is limited by societal conventions and rules. This romantic story unfolds among the most beautiful views of Florence and revolves around English writers and free-thinkers, romantic girls, and strict moralists, whom fate brings together in a hotel overlooking the Arno River. On popular tourist routes, you can experience aesthetic impressions or face existential shocks; you might encounter disappointment in humanity or discover great love. Ultimately, you may even find yourself.
A Room with a View was translated by Iaroslava Strikha, a literary scholar and Doctor of Philosophy in Literary Studies at Harvard University. The visual design of Forster's collected works features illustrations by British artist and illustrator Glynn Boyd Harte, known for his collaborations with Faber & Faber and The Folio Society. His artwork beautifully captures the atmosphere of Italy, the contrast between freedom and strict English upbringing, and the sense of change in Lucy's life.
