The second edition of our theater series features Ivan Nechuy-Levytsky's play “On the Kozhumyaky” and its adaptation by Mykhailo Starytsky — the well-known comedy “Chasing Two Hares.”
Dear and highly respected Ivan Semenovych! The drama committee has entrusted me with reviewing your Kozhumyaky and developing a plan to adapt it for the stage. I did so, read my plan, and it was highly praised; so now I am sending it to you for approval," Mykhailo Starytskyi wrote to Ivan Nechui-Levytskyi in 1883.
Ultimately, under Starytsky's editorship, the comedy attained the expected success.
Our edition of both plays includes comments and an introduction by Mykhailo Nazarenko.
The book was illustrated by Halya Verheles. It was important for her to depict the transition from Ivan Nechui-Levytskyi's realistic style to Mykhailo Starytskyi's theatrical, embellished, and colorful version. Halya's illustrations highlight the eclecticism of bourgeois life and architecture in Kyiv, where new buildings rise alongside old ones.
The Theater Series is a collection of art books that reimagines classic plays and showcases contemporary drama, comedy, and tragedy through visual storytelling.
