The freethinker and founder of “scientific egoism,” Claude-Adrien Helvétius (1715–1771), explores the connection between the science of man and the science of the state. Highlighting the equal capacity of individuals for intellectual growth, the philosopher emphasizes the importance of overcoming ignorance as a key to personal happiness and a strong nation. Helvétius assigns this responsibility to the state, which must create “wise laws” and ensure comprehensive education and the development of people's potential so they can benefit society.
